Equities close lower on profit booking

MUMBAI: Equities pared gains and closed moderately higher after a strong open on Thursday on account of profit booking. Sector-wise consumer durables dragged while realty stocks out-performed the benchmarks.

Bombay Stock Exchange’s benchmark closed at provisional 19,816.15, up 78.08 points or 0.40 per cent. National Stock Exchange’s Nifty closed at 5,960.65, up 20 points or 0.35 per cent.

Sensex opened above the psychological mark 20,000 and Nifty crossed 6,000 soon after the market opened but drifted lower as the day progressed.

Biggest Sensex contributors were Cipla (4.2%), Reliance Energy (3.36%), ICICI Bank (3.3%), Bharti Airtel (2.58%), HDFC (2.51%) and DLF (2.34%)

Hindalco Industries (down 3.14%), Grasim Industries (2.56%), Tata Steel (2.29%), Bajaj Auto (2.14%) and ONGC (1.6%) were the losers.

BSE Smallcap Index closed 0.85 per cent or 80 points higher at 11,367 and BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,047, down 5.68 points or 0.06 per cent.

BSE Realty Index closed 4 per cent higher while the outperforming BSE Consumer Durable Index fell 2.95 per cent.

Market breadth on BSE showed 1,808 advances and 1,038 declines.
